The mother of a 10-year-old girl in Denbighshire, Wales was shocked to learn that her daughter spent PS2,500 without her knowledge on Roblox microtransactions.
Georgina Munday, a mother of a 10-year-old autistic girl on the autism spectrum, had allowed her to play Roblox on her iPad. She believed it was an innocent game. The daughter is said to have been playing more than normal after a short break from her schooling due to problems in her education.
The children’s games were responsible for a string of bank transactions that led to an astonishing PS2,500. Roblox allows players to spend real money on Robux. Robux is an in-game currency used for purchasing avatar accessories, including clothes, items, and effects.
Mother: “We just saw hundreds of transactions and these payment confirmations. Then the panic started – Oh my god, which card is it on?”
The child changed the iPad password, which allowed her to make purchases. She probably didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation and how much her parents would be charged.
Apple and Tesco Bank were contacted regarding a possible refund, but both refused. They said that terms and conditions for purchases were clearly stated and that there was nothing they could do. Georgina Munday only contacted BBC and specifically, You and Yours to get Tesco Bank back in contact and they said the entire amount would be returned.
Roblox released a statement regarding the issue, stating that “parental settings can be set to limit how much children spend and to receive notifications about their spending.”
It’s not the first time has caused parents to lose money. In-game currency for Roblox, Fortnite as well as Fornite can be expensive for parents who’ve let their children buy things in games without parental supervision. The bank was able to provide a full refund. However, it shows that parents should be vigilant about what their children do on games.
