FIRAXIS IS RETIRING FROM XCOM 2’S CHALLENGE MODES AND MULTIPLAYER THIS MONTH
After six years of development and many updates, XCOM 2 will be closing its doors this March.
Firaxis announced that it would be ending the Multiplayer and Challenge modes of the game in an update posted to the platform. This won’t affect console or Mac versions.
Firaxis claims that the patch will bring about the change. The measure is only taken to make it easier to fund other projects. The complete statement can be found below.
We wanted to inform the XCOM 2 community that services for Multiplayer will be ending for the Steam version. The functionality will be removed from the Steam version of XCOM 2 by an update on March 28. This won’t impact XCOM 2 for Mac.
This decision to retire these services was not taken lightly. However, it allows us to refocus resources. We are grateful for your support and appreciate your understanding.
The core of XCOM 2 is its engaging campaign. However, the extra modes provided something smaller. Multiplayer allowed players to pick a team of humans or aliens to battle each other in unique combat situations. The War of the Chosen expansion added Challenge mode in 2017. It pits players against one another in a daily score attack scenario.
Unfortunately, Challenge mode didn’t take off as planned. There were complaints about cheating and no mod usage measures that quickly marred any healthy competition. It was subject to changes but never recovered.
Firaxis is currently working on the Marvel game Midnight Suns. It will be released on PC soon.
