Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is expected to be an enormous 2nd instalment in the FF7 Remake trilogy. Surprisingly, the JRPG was heavily influenced by CD Project Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The game’s secrets were revealed in a recent interview with Game Informer. The co-director of FF7: Rebirth, Motomu Toriyama, said that the tales of Geralt of Rivia are affecting the game’s design.

Contrary to most games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s side missions felt like fully-fledged missions in their own right, featuring dialogue, original assets and precise animations. The game’s side quests are now incorporated into the creation of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, giving new meaning to the additional game content Cloud and the rest of the group are expected to engage with.

Toriyama said that the quality of the companion quests is an important “baseline” that the team must reach, and perhaps even exceed, in this brand-new game.

“Regarding titles such as The Witcher 3, which features an open-world-style role-playing aspect, we conducted thorough research on these kinds of games. Our goal is to be with it, and provide the kind of game which is enjoyable to the players of this game,” the co-director said.

It’s not the only occasion that a Final Fantasy game has also been in the spirit of CDPR’s masterpiece from 2014. Final Fantasy 16 was also influenced by the game’s tone and plot, giving it a dark, more Western-styled experience, unlike the typical instalments.

Despite the release of Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still the benchmark to aim for in the newest RPGs. It was once similar to Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls and Fallout titles; CDPR has crushed the rivals, even though its name was tarnished because of the game’s initial state.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on PlayStation 5 on February 29th 20,24. The game will also be available on a PC version scheduled to launch in the near future. However, it appears that an Xbox port seems unlikely to be in the works.
