Gaming has developed a lot within the past 20 years. While some improvements have been positive, some are nostalgic for how they were. This is the case with an individual who revealed they don’t like the old God of War’s sack-and-slash gameplay.

God of War was first released in 2005, followed by God of War II and God of War III. Following a hiatus of eight years, God of War returned in the reboot of 2018’s God of War, followed by its God of War: Ragnarok sequel God of War Ragnarok in 2022. In its run, the series underwent a series of modifications, such as the setting and its combat style.

The first God of War game saw the protagonist, the Spartan warrior Kratos, utilize his weapons to perform a variety of hack-and-slash combinations. But, with its latest versions, the battle involves more close-range combative battles and Kratos’s “Rage” ability, which, in effect, makes him the Incredible Hulk’s greener cousin. While the reboot is a hit, many are unhappy with the new way of combat and prefer the hack-and-slash style of play.

“Playing Dante’s Inferno again because of Halloween season, and it has me missing the old GoW type over-the-top hack-and-slash games,” said one Reddit user. “I would love to see something like this done on an AA budget today.” A different user attributed the change to the RPG genre: “The open game and RPG features can make it difficult to enjoy the experience too. I’m a fan of the older method and dislike the present state of gaming that everything is based on similar titles that have been successful (open world and RPG) or been reinvented as something that it didn’t have to be to reach an even larger number of players.”

An insider in the industry recently announced the sequel God of War Ragnarok God of War Ragnarok. We could see another game from the series within the next few months. Whether or not the title will follow the brand new and old formula for combat is yet to be determined.
