Getting Over It follows Diogenes, who lives in a large metal cauldron. His weapon of choice is his Yosemite hammer which allows him to grasp objects and move himself around the map with it. Players use either mouse or trackpad (controllers are supported but lack precision due to lack of joystick precision), to control his upper body movement as well as that of the sledge hammer in order to climb up a steep mountainside using only their mouse or trackpad (controllers are supported but make the game harder due to lack of precision with joysticks), to move their character’s upper body movements and use their sledge hammer.
As players progress up the mountain, they are always at risk of losing some or all of their progress; there are no checkpoints. The game ends when a player reaches the highest point on the map and enters space. At that point, a message asks if players are recording gameplay; if not, access to a chatroom filled with other players who have completed it.
