Choosing the Best Class to Play in WoW WotLK
You’re spoiled for choice
A new WoW Classic expansion means new content, and this particular one also means a new class. Now that there are 10 classes to choose from, choosing one to play is more challenging. Of course, you can use alts to experience the other classes, but other players would like to start with the best. Whether farming WotLK Classic gold or raiding, they’d want to be prepared for anything.
However, the word ‘best’ is subjective and depends on your preferences. The best DPS is not the best healer, after all. So pick a role you want to play, and narrow down your choice.
Best WoW WotLK Classic DPS Class
The 5 best DPS classes, especially for Phase 1, are:
- Affliction Warlock
- Assassination Rogue
- Unholy Death Knight
- Frost Death Knight
- Arcane Mage
Warlocks, in particular, have an affinity in the early phases of the expansion. Affliction and Demonology Warlocks stay in the top spots of DPS rankings, though they fall off near the end. In that case, Rogues are a more consistent DPS class, but the top specializations change and shift.
Death Knights also enjoy being consistently on top of the charts with fewer fluctuations. The catch is that it only applies to the Frost and Unholy specializations, as Blood is too reliant on WotLK items
to function effectively. Also, the community treats the spec more of a tank, even if it can fill the role of a DPS.
Lastly, Mages are like Rogues, where depending on your specialization, you can stay on top of the rankings. Frost Mages are at the bottom of the pack, unfortunately.

Best WoW WotLK Classic Healers
- Holy Paladin
- Discipline Priest
- Restoration Druid
- Restoration Shaman
- Holy Priest
Paladins are popular in Wrath of the Lich King Classic for healing or tanking. They almost own the expansion for their great utility and wide-reaching heals. It’s no wonder why players flock around them and want them in their teams.
Similarly, Discipline Priests have abilities that let them take on damage for their teammates. In the expansion, that is an invaluable skill many players would love in raids. They don’t beat out Paladins in utility but come close.
Restoration Druids have the best Heal Over Time abilities, which are helpful in many situations in the expansion. They may not have anything else going for them, but Druids are easier to learn and have an excellent variety of utility skills.
On the lower end are Restoration Shamans and Holy Priests. They’re victims of some particularly cruel nerfs, coupled with new abilities for other specializations that outstrip theirs. This made them fall from grace as healers, and better options exist.
Best WoW WotLK Tanks
- Protection Paladin
- Blood Death Knight
- Feral Druid
- Protection Warrior
As mentioned above, Paladins reign in this expansion. Their utility and tanking ability are off the charts. While other specializations got some buffs with Wrath of the Lich King, none of them came close to Paladins. Of note is Consecration, an ability that could buff the Paladin’s skill in pulling mobs of enemies.
Death Knights are a new addition. They’re best at solo tanking situations, but their DPS abilities mean they don’t lose threat at critical moments. Plus, they have surprisingly high DPS outputs. Unfortunately, they’re worst at AoE tanking situations. Their helpfulness depends on the situation and circumstances.
Feral Druids are a mixed bag. They do have an immense health pool but have weak DPS output. If you don’t mind that, then this is a good pick. Otherwise, you’d be better off with a different specialization or class.
Protection Warriors may be at the bottom. However, this could change near the end of the expansion. Also, they’re a good option, except others would be better. In any tanking aspect, other classes far outstrip their abilities, which is why they’re at the bottom. They can function as tanks, just not as well as the others.
Best WoW WotLK Class for Starting Out
This is a bonus consideration for any newbies who might want to start their World of Warcraft experience with WotLK Classic. Druids are an excellent starting point for newbies because you can try out ranged or melee in any role to get a feel of the game. By switching up your builds, you can try out being a tank (Feral), DPS (Balance), or healer (Restoration).
With this, you can figure out what you like best. The other classes would work the same way, so it is perfect for experiencing a range of mechanics in one class. Once you get a feel for your preferences, you can create another character with the specializations you like.
Best Overall WoW WotLK Class (for Beginners)
Paladins reign in this expansion, with Death Knights at a close second. Holy and Protection specs will enjoy raid groups fawning over them in any phase. They have the best utility and healing or tanking abilities among the classes, and you’ll be glad to have them on your team.
Death Knights may be new, but their hybrid tanking and DPS abilities (and relative novelty) make them stand out. They can dominate in specific situations with the proper investment and gear. However, they could be useless in those outside their expertise.
You’re Free to Choose
Many classes, such as Hunters or Shamans, weren’t mentioned much here. That doesn’t exempt them from being candidates for the ‘best WotLK’ class. You have your preferences, and if those two classes match yours, it will be the best for you.
To enjoy the game, you don’t have to follow the popular or ‘meta’ classes. Play it how you want to, and that’s how you can have the most fun. Meta is for the competitive players who thrive on min-maxing their stats. Trying to emulate them will lead to stress and burnout if that’s not you.
Play at your own pace, whether just farming WotLK gold, questing, or raiding. Enjoy World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic!
