Shovel Knight is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that uses an 8-bit graphic style. Players control the protagonist, Shovel Knight, as he collects treasures and fights the Order of No Quarter. Shovel Knight uses his shovel to attack enemies and find treasure. He can also aim below enemies while jumping to bounce on them, much like the DuckTales pogo jump or Zelda II: The Adventure of Link’s downward thrust. The player can find Chester, a salesman hidden in many levels. He can then purchase secondary items called relics, which can be used with limited amounts of magic. These include long-range projectiles and gloves that can break through dirt blocks. A locket grants invincibility for a short time.
