The Callisto Protocol is the sci-fi horror video game created by the same creative minds who made Dead Space. It was announced and conceived as a game that would take place in the PlayerUnknown’s Battleground universe several centuries into the future. Glen Schofield, former Visceral Games CEO and current Striking Distance Studios CEO, says that this is no longer true. The game now has its own world and properties, apart from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Schofield wrote on Twitter: “FYI,” Schofield wrote, “@CallistoTheGame has its own story and universe. It is no longer set in the PUBG universe. It was initially part of the timeline but has since grown into its own world. PUBG is great and we [sic] will continue to have many surprises for fans, but TCP has its own universe, story, world, and universe.

The original story of the game had it takes place in 2320 at the Black Iron prison colony on Jupiter’s Moon Callisto. Thus the title. You would play as one of the prisoners and must survive an alien invasion that reaches the prison’s doors. Although it was not clear what this had to do with PUBG it did share the same theme of prisons so I think it does have that.

It is evident that The Callisto Protocol was originally intended to be part of the PUBGuniverse. Krafton, formerly Bluehole, was the South Korean publisher responsible for PUBG. Krafton founded Striking Distance Studios. They wanted to expand the universe in a similar way that Riot tried to expand League of Legends in various games and genres. They aren’t clinging to the idea too tightly and will let go of it when it makes sense.

Schofield, in a long interview with Game Informer this month, admitted that he was channelling a lot of Dead Space into the Callisto Protocol.

Schofield stated, “I don’t want to shy away form a good idea just because it was in one my games.” Schofield said that all game designers look at ideas from other games. Picasso once said that great artists steal from good artists. Why not steal from me?

The Callisto Protocol has a 2022 release in mind.
