Demonic Director Neill Blomkamp Might Direct a Gran Turismo Movie
Yesterday’s corporate presentation by Sony showed that the company had more television and film projects in its pipeline. The company also confirmed the God of War series on Amazon Prime and announced a Horizon series on Netflix. It also mentioned something related to Gran Turismo. It was my assumption that this meant a revival of the GT Academy web series where Gran Turismo participants competed to be real race car drivers.
Evidently, this is not true. According to Deadline Gran Turismo is being considered a feature-length film. The director Neill Blomkamp is being considered for the director’s seat. That would be Neill Blomkamp, the director of Demonic and Chappie. Blomkamp would not be the first director to be attached to a gaming project. He originally intended to make a Halo movie before he was forced to cancel due to scheduling conflicts. He has also directed short films for Holo and Arnhem. He is currently working with Gunzilla Games to develop the game Off The Grid.
It is hard to imagine what a Gran Turismo movie would look like. Is this a typical drama about a young, unproven racer who is given the chance to make it to the big leagues? Is it Days of Thunder today, or Ford V Ferrari, which focuses on some history of the game? Or is this a thinly veiled thriller with the Gran Turismo title, similar to 2014’s Need for Speed movie starring Aaron Paul? This last one was not good!
We now know a lot more about the shape and design of PlayStation Productions’ Gran Turismo Project. This project joins the other ten currently in development that are based on PlayStation Games. These projects include:
- Uncharted (Film)
- Ghost of Tsushima Film
- The Last of Us(HBO)
- Twisted Metal Peacock
- God Of War (Amazon).
- Horizon -Netflix
Uncharted is the global box office’s top-grossing movie. Sony has likely hoped for more wins with all its projects. This means that everything is a potential cinematic brand. While we wait for the film to be released, you can still play the consistently excellent Gran Turismo7 on PlayStation 5.
