The journey is a game where the player controls a robed character in a vast desert. He travels towards a distant mountain. You can find other players on the same journey. Two players can help each other and speak or text but cannot see their names until the credits. A musical chime is the only way to communicate between them. It transforms the level’s levels from the dull cloth into vibrant red and allows the player to move on through the levels.

The developers wanted to instil in the player a sense of smallness and wonder and forge an emotional bond between them and the anonymous characters they meet along their journey. Austin Wintory composed the music, and it reacts to player actions. This creates a single theme that represents the emotional arc of the story.
