Red Dead Redemption and its sequel are among the most incredible video game experiences ever. The games tell the tales of gun-fighters John Marston and Arthur Morgan. In turn, Rockstar’s action-adventure games are masters of storytelling. But which of the two men is more successful as a main character? A user took to Reddit to discover the answer.
“Who do you think is the better protagonist?” said Reddeadredemption’s WrongPatient on the r/ subreddit. The result was a heated debate with 296 responses at the moment of posting as the fans voiced their views.
People who love the Red Dead Redemption’s Marston celebrated the OG gunman, saying, “Give me John, the first game is an all-time favorite for me,” and, “John hands down. The plot is the redemption story of his entire life; Arthur was there to guide John and establish his character in Red Dead Redemption 1. The entire narrative is John’s tale to the end of the day.” A user stated that John was the primary reason they even played Red Dead Redemption 2: “John still. I was a fan of him in 2010, and one of the reasons I chose to play Red Dead 2 is because everybody knew that you’d play like him in the future.”
But, it’s pretty apparent that Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘Arthur Morgan’ is leading voting. “Arthur, however, is a well-drawn and likable character. He is redeemable and a dramatic change throughout the game,” said one user in a post, claiming John could not get redemption during the initial game. A different user initially dreaded being Arthur in the sequel “Dude. I played the RDR1 game and hated the idea that Arthur Morgan was the main roleplaying character. I was shocked. Then, I concluded the game. I felt like a horrible John! I wanted Arthur to be back! If this isn’t a testimony to the performance of Roger Clark and the script, I’m not sure what is.”
If you prefer John or Arthur more, the fact that the debate continues is a testimony to the Red Dead Redemption franchise as an entire.
