Xbox Chief Admits Microsoft Cannot ‘out console’ PlayStation
Phil Spencer admitted in a candid interview with Kinda Fun Games that the PlayStation 5 may have already won the console war. According to The Verge Spencer said: “We’re committed to making Xbox a place where people can buy consoles and feel part of an ecosystem. This is our goal. “We’re not trying to ‘out-consolate Sony or Nintendo,’ there is no win for us.”
Xbox’s chief explained that the war between Xbox Series 5 and PlayStation 5 had been lost in the previous generation of PS4/Xbox One at a moment when digital video game sales were really taking off. I see comments that say if you build good games, everything will change. There’s no way to know if you build amazing games that console shares will suddenly change in a dramatic manner. “We lost the Xbox One Generation when everyone built up their digital libraries of games,” said he.
Microsoft has some catching up to do. While Sony has been knocking it out of the park with God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Halo Infinite had been a game that was meant to define a new generation, but ended up disappointing. Forza 5 is perhaps Xbox’s most exclusive game, but it might not suffice as Microsoft appears to have a focus on Xbox Game Pass.
Microsoft needs to make up for the disappointing launch of Redfall with the release of Starfield and other games such as Forza Motorsport, Gears 6, the new Fable, or the reboot of Forza Motorsport.
