How to become a Pokemon GO Gym Trainer
The Pokemon Go Tour in Johto will allow players from all over the world to challenge new Pokemon GO Gym Trainers – Trainers like you and me – during the Pokemon Go Tour. You could be one of them.
The public was invited to be a Pokemon Trainer in-game, ahead of the last Pokemon Go Tour. The Pokemon Go Tour is back, this time focusing on Kanto and Johto. Players have the chance to get that opportunity again. Here’s how you can get your application in this round, regardless of whether you were victorious last time or not.
How to apply to become a Pokemon Go Gym Trainer
You will need a Twitter account to be considered for the Pokemon GO Tour Trainer position. To have your application reviewed by the Pokemon GO team, you must post a tweet containing all the criteria.
- A screenshot of your trainer profile showing your avatar and nickname
- Which Pokemon type will you be filling your team?
- All three types of Pokemon must be the same
- You have the option to choose between Normal, Fighting or Flying, Bug Ghost, Ice Dragon, or Steel
- Your three Pokemon
- They must be Kanto- or Johto-based and of the selected type
- Ditto, Legendary or Mythical Pokemon are not allowed.
- The hashtag #PokemonGOTourContest
Your avatar will be selected as one of the Pokemon GO Tour Trainers if you upload your tweet with the information above. You don’t even need a ticket to the GO Tour event to be eligible.
The Pokemon Go blog post states that successful entries will be selected based on consistency in the overall theme of your avatar, team, avatar items, and connection with your team’s type. The above entry is Ghost-themed. But maybe you are more of a Flying-type fan and would like Togetic to join your team while wearing the Togepi pattern hoodie. Perhaps your Ledyba Pokemon shirt perfectly matches your Ledian-led Bug team.

What is a Pokemon GO Gym trainer?
Although not much information is available about the new Pokemon GO Gym trainers, some theories are based on the past Pokemon GO Tour. The in-game trainers were GO Tour Challengers and appeared at Pokestops, similar to Team Go Rocket. After interacting with the Pokestop, Trainers could battle the Challenger in a three v3 face-off.
We can probably expect a similar Battle interaction this year. However, your opponents will appear in Gyms rather than Pokestops. This would be a great idea as it would add a new level to Pokemon GO Gyms while also leaving Pokestops open for Team GO Rocket Grunts or Leaders. We also know from the main Pokemon titles and anime that Pokemon Gyms have a particular type. This would feed into the type requirement.
We’re excited to see you all in-game, no matter what the new GO Gym Trainers have to offer. We wish you all the best and keep our fingers crossed. Please let us know which team you are choosing in the comments!
