Assassin’s Creed Shadows* Receives Positive Reviews in Japan Despite Controversial Launch

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s flagship series, has been receiving positive reviews from Japanese critics, despite its controversial launch. The game, which released on March 20 after several delays, offers a detailed and immersive recreation of feudal Japan, with many praising its scenic landscapes and seasonal weather effects.

The game features dual protagonists: the stealthy shinobi Naoe and the hack-n-slash fighter Yasuke. While Naoe’s inclusion was widely welcomed by fans, Yasuke’s portrayal sparked debates due to his historical background as a black samurai during Japan’s Sengoku period. Critics questioned his depiction as a “perfect samurai,” but reviews have acknowledged his status as a historical figure and his place within the game’s narrative.

Despite some controversy, *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* currently holds an OpenCritic score of 81, just behind *Assassin’s Creed Valhalla* and *Odyssey*. Japanese outlets like Dengeki, Game Watch, and 4Gamer have praised the game’s visuals, with one reviewer even calling the scenery “nostalgic” of childhood memories. Naoe’s character was particularly highlighted for his deeper connection to the story, while Yasuke’s portrayal was seen as more exaggerated.

Ubisoft Quebec has also taken steps to address concerns from the Japanese government. After a gameplay clip surfaced showing a player defacing a replica of a Shinto shrine, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba issued a warning about potential real-world consequences. Ubisoft responded with a patch making certain in-game objects, like shrine replicas, indestructible.

Overall, *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* seems to be resonating well with Japanese players, overcoming early controversy to deliver a highly praised experience.
