Xbox uses AI art to promote indie games, causing mass backlash
Making a few concessions during the holiday season, Xbox used naff AI images to advertise its independent games via social media. Gamers are likely unhappy with the art created by generative technology and are slamming the multi-billion-dollar company using this controversial technology.
Published on Twitter on the 27th of December on the 27th of December, ID@Xbox tweeted an artificially created picture of cartoon characters sliding over the Xbox logo while surrounded by snow. The caption reads “Walking in an Indie Wonderland. What are your most cherished indie games from the past year?”
Many fans instantly noticed the use of AI generation to create the picture in the Xbox post. Problems that range from lips instead of teeth and limbs with extra legs to sky becoming fishing lines are observed in abundance, and gamers and developers reacted negatively towards the company because of its poor job.
“Nothing says ‘we don’t care about indie developers’ like using AI,” stated Twitter’s artist NecroKuma3. ” If you can’t hire an artist to do advertising, I highly doubt you’ll do it with independent developers.”
Since the purpose of Microsoft’s brand is to communicate with indie game developers and promote their efforts using artificial intelligence to advertise the indie-focused game industry, it is a tone-deaf choice for Microsoft’s gaming company. It’s unfortunate that at this time, there were a lot of expectations for the corporation’s usage of AI.
Microsoft is among the most prominent advocates of artificial intelligence at the moment of writing. The search engine that it uses is second-rate. Irritating AI assistants have enhanced Bing. The firm also tries to include AI arts features into Microsoft Paint as everything is not considered sacred.
Although Xbox offers a warm image for developers from indie, its parent company is big on artificial intelligence. Even though games like Hi-Fi Rush, our most popular Xbox Game of the Year winner, have been widely praised for their incredible art, Microsoft seems more enthusiastic about exploring the art of making profits.
AI-created art may follow the same path since NFTs are already out of the water. Ultimately, what’s an artwork without purpose, meaning, or interest?
