New data reveals that in 2023 the PlayStation 5 outsold Xbox Series X/S three to one, making Black Friday an extraordinary success story for Sony.
Before we dive in, please leave your console wars nonsense at home. In my household, we celebrate all consoles equally; I enjoy gaming on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch with equal joy. But sales figures can reveal insight into which products or experiences consumers find appealing; in 2015 it seems the PlayStation 5 captured gamers attention even during its otherwise quiet year at Sony.
As reported by IGN, Sony has achieved their target goal of selling 50 million PlayStation 5 units – on track to outsell PlayStation 4. New data from Reuters suggests Sony had its best November ever for PlayStation 5 sales this year with Black Friday being especially lucrative. By 31 March 2024 – when their financial year ends – they plan on shifting 25 million PS5 consoles – an ambitious plan which they believe they are on target to achieve.
Sony hopes that by 2019 its sales will surpass those of any previous financial year by selling over one million consoles in total – which would mark an all-time record! While it will take time before Sony can match PlayStation 4’s 117 million sales total with PS5 sales growing by 65-75% to 22.5 million units sold this year versus Xbox sales falling 15% and totalling 7.6 million, thus outselling Series X/S by roughly three to one.
The Nintendo Switch saw sales decrease 18% to 16.4 million units shifted this year compared to 2017. Being the oldest console mentioned here, its successor will probably emerge sometime before 2024 arrives – we shall wait and see!
