UPDATED: Sega cancels Hyenas following closed beta
28 September 2023, after the cancellation of Hyenas, IGN reports that the entire studio involved in the game’s development faces redundancy.
After its first public announcement, Hyenas received an enthusiastic reception from those who participated in the recent closed beta. The group responsible for Alien: Isolation, developed by UK Studio Creative Assembly, planned to publish the shooter game with co-op in 2023.
Released by Sega, The game was a huge success, and many players anticipated the game’s final version game, which was due to launch in the last period of this year.
In the wake of the reports of a complicated development procedure and study of its operations, Sega announced it had abandoned plans to launch Hyenas entirely, which surprised the people who got a chance to experience the game during Gamescom at the beginning of 2023.
Why did Sega cancel Hyenas?
On 28 September 2023, Sega issued an announcement that cited structural changes across the company’s European operations as a reason for the decision and also announced an estimated loss of 14.3 billion dollars (PS78.54 million) in the current fiscal year.
Then, the announcement, Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki confirmed Hyenas had been removed.
The article reads: “Due to the deterioration in profitability in the European region, we will review the title portfolio developed and each European site and discontinue Hyenas.”
Among rumors about Hyenas being a game that is free to play, Eurogamer reported Sega had labeled the game to be a “challenging title” to develop as the company was modifying its business strategy.
Hyenas first came out in the summer of 2022 as the first co-op shooter title, scheduled to release for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Alongside the demise of Hyenas, Sega also revealed it has canceled additional “unannounced titles under development.” August was 2023 when Sega concluded its purchase of Rovio, who developed the viral game for mobile phones, Angry Birds.
Despite the changes to the development process, Hyenas won’t be entering an arena of competitive shooters. Other unannounced titles are also canceled; we’ll be able to look forward to seeing what Sega is planning to release during the next twelve months.
