PlayStation Home was ‘5-10 years ahead of its time’ claims the executive
It’s very easy to glance at the past and conclude that it was ahead of its time however the situation in this case is right. The question of whether it’s good or not will depend on the mileage you take. PlayStation Executive Jim Ryan had been speaking about Metaverse and Sony’s plans for the Metaverse in conjunction with PlayStation’s Metaverse plans in earlier documents that were not released in Microsoft’s Microsoft V. FTC deposition.
Ryan stated the PlayStation Home was “10 to 15 years ahead of the times.” PlayStation Home was an online social network for gamers to socialize for the PlayStation 3 and very much similar to Second Life when it was launched. It’s true that we can see this type of internet interaction as a part of the infamous ‘Metaverse.’
Ryan said it was the Home series a “very very early expression” in the Metaverse however, it can be said the case that Home proved to be more popular than the other Metaverse products of the present current. Metaverse seems to be popular among executives. Ryan continued to say, “We have a couple of initiatives in the works that are interesting for us with the intention of creating a type of game-based Metaverse that could possibly involve cooperation with other areas in Sony.”
In the last few years, Web3 ideas have become an object of ridicule in the field after numerous businesses attempted to join the bandwagon that was already loosened. NFTs slipped away Blockchain is not a big deal to players, and the metaverse exists in many games like Second Life as well as in numerous MMOs.
Reviving the Home is a huge win for Sony and Sony Pictures, as long as other businesses are willing to look into Metaverse possibilities. Interconnecting hubs that connect PlayStation Games, Sony Pictures film, and the other Sony properties is a potential success. However, it can be done with games like Fortnite which has evolved into an entertainment-related platform.
Is there a reason to have something similar today? Particularly when we are interconnected through social media, which as of home was still in its early stages.
