Dead Cells by Motion Twin is an indie video game featuring elements of both roguelikes and metroidvanias, created using procedurally generated levels combined with action exploration gameplay reminiscent of metroidvanias. Dead Cells has been described as a “roguevania”, meaning its gameplay combines procedurally generated gameplay elements alongside exploration-focused metroidvania elements for maximum enjoyment.

At the outset of every game, the player controls an army of cells which reside inside of and are controlling a deceased prisoner at first. As they explore various dungeons and battle creatures within, collecting weapons, armor, abilities, power-ups and money along the way. Some enemies that you defeat will drop cells that can be used to obtain permanent power-ups such as health potions or items you’ll come back later to buy or find.

These cells must only be spent when reaching the end of each dungeon section; should a player die prior to this point, all collected cells will be lost forever. Each level is procedurally generated using merging predesigned sections in random configuration along with random enemy and item placement. Combat in this game resembles that found in Souls series games, featuring difficult enemies with specific behaviors which the player can learn, frequent player character deaths being an essential aspect of gameplay and boss enemies known as Keepers which must be defeated at regular intervals during gameplay – such as The Concierge, Conjunctiviousness Time Keeper or Hand of King (currently four in total).
