What is Return to Monkey Island?
Monkey Island, a series of point-and-click games, is a classic. It puts you in Guybrush Threepwood’s shoes, a useless pirate who wants to be the most famous and well-known pirate in the Caribbean. He also has to deal with LeChuck, an evil undead pirate who is his true love, Governor Elaine Marley. They are beloved for their ability to combine humour with immersive gameplay seamlessly, and they were primarily designed to make you laugh. They often break the fourth wall and make fun of the fact that they are playing a videogame. This Steam page states that it is set many years after previous games in this series. Events have moved substantially beyond what players may remember from the previous titles.
Guybrush Threepwood has been a long time since he was last in a duel with LeChuck, his archnemesis. Guybrush’s true love, Elaine Marley, has moved away from governing. Guybrush is also unfulfilled and adrift, as he has never discovered the Secret of Monkey Island. Captain Madison and his young pirate leaders have removed the old guard. Melee Island has gone berserk, and Stan, a well-known businessman, has been jailed for “marketing related crimes”. Enjoy a good time with old friends, and meet new people on familiar islands now under new leadership. Next, you will need to take to the high seas to explore new and unexplored areas as you try and solve complex problems. Guybrush is a combination of clever puzzles, extraordinary situations and devastating ripostes.
A new gameplay trailer was also shown at the Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase. It features returning favourite mechanics as well as some newer ones.
When and on what platforms are the game due to be released?
Return to Monkey Island is scheduled for release in the latter part of this year, but no exact date has been set other than 2022. Return to Monkey Island is expected to launch on other consoles in the future, but the Nintendo Switch will be the first to get it. However, you will be able to access the game via Steam on your PC until it is available for other consoles.
