Call Of Duty Outsold by Elden Ring
When Elden Ring was first released and received a lot of 10/10 reviews (including from us), I confidently stated that the game of the year had been determined. It seems that FromSoftware is getting more popular as big titles leave the 2022 schedule (Zelda and Starfield)
It’s almost three months since its release. However, it’s hard to find anyone discussing FromSoftware’s latest. Last week, it was reported that had sold 13.4 million copies of HTML1, almost half the total sales of all Dark Souls games. According to Kotaku, it has even outsold the latest Call of Duty title.
There have been many ways for players to play Elden Ring that wasn’t planned by the developers. For example, they used dance mats as controllers. You can see the results below.
NPD data shows that Elden Ring has been the most popular game this year, taking into account both digital and physical sales. It’s currently followed by LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Activision’s 2021 release Call of Duty: Vanguard is in seventh place.
It is possible to compare Elden Ring and Vanguard figures, but it might not be the best comparison. The Call of Duty franchise had suffered its worst launch in 14 years. Activision later admitted that the new instalment hadn’t lived up to expectations and that not enough innovation was made.
Activision Blizzard stated in its April investor report that Call of Duty is still a highly successful entertainment franchise. “Our premium 2021 release didn’t exceed our expectations. We believe this was primarily due to the execution of our team.”
However, Elden Ring has been doing exceptionally well. It had sold three times as many copies by March than Bandai Namco expected. It’s not bad at all. It’s not slowing down at all at the rate that people are buying it, so it will no doubt be giving more big titles a run for the money.
