Sonic the Hedgehog 2 reunites the SEGA hero with more action and adventure. The film also features a more sinister Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. The film draws further inspiration from video games and delivers non-stop entertainment from start to finish.

Ben Schwartz voices Sonic once more and nails the role with his charming quippy personality. Sonic is just too adorable. He’s also hilariously funny, especially when he shares screen time with Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba). They bounce off each other so well that even though this film is Sonic’s on the posters, Knuckles will be the show’s star.

It was only natural to bring back Tails and Knuckles after the success of the blue blur’s debut movie in 2020. Paramount also cast Idris Elba as the red anthropomorphic elephantine. Knuckles is hilarious, and Elba is often missed when he isn’t on screen. He is brutishly cute, a badass, in every single action scene, but he has such sweetness to him with his background in the film.

The film’s overall plot follows the video games more closely than in the first movie. Dr. Robotnik has returned from his mushroom exile. He is now fully the Eggman we know and love from video games. He’s now on a quest for Master Emerald to fulfill his plans for world dominance. Sonic and Tails can stop Robotnik. Together, they embark on an Indiana Jones-esque adventure to search for the Emerald before Robotnik. This is a remarkable journey full of laughter and a touching story about friendship. It’s a film children will love, but adults will also enjoy it.

Fans will be thrilled to hear Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s voice as Miles ‘Tails’ Prower. She’s been a familiar face for the role for many years on animated series and video games. Although it’s great to see her alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic, there are moments when she feels a bit out of place. Some lines are delivered in a very videogame way and don’t seem to bounce off the other characters. This film is more video-game-like than it feels. It is still amazing to see Tails on the big screen and many moments made me smile.

Paramount seems to have found its feet with this series of films – something we didn’t expect after the horrifying trailer for 2020. They did a good thing because Sonic The Hedgehog II is so enjoyable that I want to watch it again. It’s funny, packed with action, brimming full of references to the games, and is better than the original film. It’s exciting to see where this series takes the series.
