This is old news. However, with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands just two days away, it is worth reminding people that physical Xbox One copies can’t freely update to an Xbox Series X/S as many cross-gen games do.

The Borderlands’spinoff offers an off-upgrade plan, which contrasts many games that allow players to upgrade to a PlayStation 5/X/S version without restriction after they have purchased the game. It’s inconsistent, mainly because of that. According to an FAQ posted on the official website, PS4 and Xbox One copies will work with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles via backwards compatibility.

However, if you need a version that is optimized for your system, this is where things get tricky. PS5 owners who have a physical copy of the PS4 will need to pay a fee to upgrade to the PS5 version. This is consistent with the current practice of many companies. However, standard physical copies of the Xbox One edition are not available. You can only buy the Next Level Edition or the Chaotic Great Edition to get the game on Xbox One. This includes both the X/S and the Chaotic Great Edition versions.

This limitation does not apply to the digital Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands version on Xbox One. Gearbox and 2K don’t want to talk about this publicly as there is likely a very arbitrary reason. We all know how delicate these systems can be. If you plan to buy Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands when it launches Friday, March 25, make sure you know how to get it on Xbox One if it is a game you plan on playing.

Although a digital Xbox One copy may be cheaper than an Xbox Series S/X copy, it will not give you the same access as an Xbox Series S/X copy. I’m a rural person, and that makes downloading games slow. This might be the best way to save money in the long term.
