Linking to FFXIV Account Causes Problems If Your Steam name is Weird
Square Enix announced last month that FFXIV players would need to connect to their Square Enix accounts. According to Square Enix, the move was made to “enhance account safety.” Unfortunately, this new requirement has caused some problems.

The community has found a solution to the problem. Steam allows for more characters than the alphanumeric standard. Anyone who has a Steam account and uses special characters, such as “. Change your Steam username to any standard alphanumeric characters, and the error will disappear. You can log in normally.
However, users have reported that the fix doesn’t work for them. The FFXIV team was aware of the problem and posted a statement to the Lodestone.

There is no information on when a possible fix might be available. Change your Steam account name to fix the problem. Linux users are also reporting issues in the new system. However, Linux is technically not supported for FFXIV.
