Everyone was shocked when Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel was launched on Steam with little fanfare. This deck-building card game, which is free to download and play, based on popular anime, quickly gained popularity among players and has soared up the Steam charts.

The elemental fusion card games are already the fourth most downloaded online storefront, even though they only launched on 19 January. Interestingly, free-to-play titles dominate the Steam charts, with many taking up most of the top spots.

Many games benefit from the freedom to play – it’s evident that people love the idea of being able to test out a game for free. Many of the most lucrative Steam games in 2021 were free to play. Destiny 2, Counter-Strike Global OffensiveApex Legends were all included in the top 12 most lucrative Steam games of 2021. Another PUBG was released for free this month. Battlefield 2042 is also rumoured to be on the horizon.

The new Yu-Gi-Oh! The new Yu-Gi-Oh! The mobile game was released yesterday (26/01/), but Konami promised it would be available on all platforms. This means that you can keep your hard-earned and purchased deck no matter what platform you play it. You will also participate in online battles against other players regardless of platform.

Konami seems to be looking for accessibility and playability and hopes that players will make in-game purchases. Although profits have not yet been announced, the sheer volume of downloaded games looks very promising.
