What is a TN Panel?

TN panels (Twisted Nematics) are the most common type of monitor for gamers. They have faster response times than IPS or VA panels, making them ideal for gamers. TN monitors are generally less expensive than their IPS counterparts.

You will always find a cheaper TN option, whether you’re looking for a new 4K monitor or a faster 144Hz/ refresh rate monitor. A TN monitor may have narrow viewing angles and poor color reproduction, but it is still good for gaming. If you don’t have the budget for a TN screen and can play a 4K video at maximum settings, it wouldn’t make sense to choose IPS when IPS brings more vibrancy and immersion. The TN monitor is still an option for those who love to play competitively.

What is an IPS Panel?

In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels display crisp images and precise color detail. They are great for editing images, video editing and content creation. However, they can’t produce better blacks.

IPS panels used to be considered less responsive than TN panels. However, they were able to provide high response times. This can technically still be true. However, IPS panels offer a wide range of low-response time options. They provide the same responsiveness as TN panels but with better color reproduction and wider viewing angles.

What is a VA Panel?

VA panels are built to be compatible with both IPS panels and TN panels. They are located in the middle of the panel and can be separated by MVA or PVA.

They have better viewing angles, darker blacks and better color contrast. VA panels were unable to compete with TN’s fast response times in the past. However, this is no longer the case with all panels now using the same technology.

The Differences Between TN and IPS vs. VA Monitors

It can be challenging to pick the right one due to all the available features. To help you decide, we have compiled and highlighted the differences between TN vs. IPS vs. VA Monitors.

Let’s now discuss the differences between the main monitors.

Response time

TN monitors generally have quick response times. These monitors have a quick response time, ranging from 1ms to under 5ms. This should give you an edge when playing competitive games.

IPS monitors used to take a while to process images. Their response times ranged from 5ms to 6ms, depending on which brand. This is no longer the case. IPS monitors are now as responsive as TN.

Response times are unimportant, but an IPS panel will cost you more than TN or VA.
