FFXIV Server Issues Continue, Director Naoki Yoshida Offers Update

Final Fantasy XIV’s Endwalker expansion was released to early access a week ago. However, its server woes continue to rage like it’s still the first day. Square Enix’s director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, continues to work with his team towards a solution as Square Enix reckons with infrastructure issues. In their most recent blog post, Yoshida highlighted additional problems players might face when logging into the MMO.

Yoshida’s latest update admits that Final Fantasy XIV’s servers still struggle to keep up with player demand, even after last week’s maintenance to relieve congestion problems. The lobby server maintenance and errors made last Wednesday raised the limit on the number of players who can wait to get in. However, it appears some disconnection problems persist because queues exceed the 17,000 people limit. The director explained how to fix any disconnection issues caused by other factors.

Causes of Error 2002 – Login Queues, Player Connections

This error is most likely to have appeared at least once if you tried to log in to Final Fantasy XIV this week. After waiting in a queue of 5,000 people for hours, we see the same ugly message repeatedly. Finally, we are kicked in the middle and sent back towards the beginning. Yoshida provided an update last week on this issue but noted that it persists today in Yoshida’s response. Two reasons are why.

You’re probably familiar with the first. Many people are trying to access the server, and hardware limitations don’t allow it. This one is the most difficult. There are too many people trying to get in, and the server is kicking players to stop the entire thing from going down. Yoshida, the team, is sorry for this, but it’s not their fault. It’s best to avoid peak hours.

This second reason for Error 2002 could be something you can fix on your own. The blog post suggests that you could have a problem with your internet connection, explaining why some disconnects occur. Because we all spend so much time waiting in line, chances of us losing our place in the queue have increased dramatically. Yoshida suggests that you check your connection twice to ensure it is stable. If possible, try hardwiring in.

Errors 4004 and 3001: World/Zone Outages

Today’s announcement stated that any Errors 4004 or 3001 should be addressed immediately. Wednesday’s maintenance dealt with an issue in which players were booted or timed out as they waited to be seated. Yesterday’s update, December 10, addressed the issue once more and appeared to have worked.

Yoshida claims that they haven’t received any reports of kicks from either 4004 or 3001 yet. After logging in, the 3001 may encounter a second issue. Some Worlds and zones (like Tonberry) can temporarily crash due to congestion and boot those occupying them. You’ll still be able to see 3001 until Square Enix finds a solution.

Error 9002 Causes and 9006 Causes – Kicked during Cutscenes

This one is a bit more mysterious. Yoshida requested that players tap a key every so often during long cutscenes to ensure their game doesn’t idle or give up on an auto-kick. Final Fantasy XIV’s development team has received numerous reports about 9002 and 9006. They are investigating to determine if there is a cause. This issue is caused by an unstable connection from the player’s side in most cases. He’s again asking people to inspect their home setup and ensure that everything is stable.

It’s a horrible situation. I finished Endwalker last evening and have spent many hours in the queue. Logging in the early hours of North American mornings seems to be the trick, but it is not an option for those who work from home. Final Fantasy XIV’s Team and Yoshida were open and transparent about their expectations regarding server problems in the lead-up to Endwalker. Unfortunately, all their hard work was wasted on an unpleasant part.

I will continue to be patient until there is a better long-term solution. I hope that the rest of my community will do the same. We are currently in the middle of a global pandemic. The shortages caused due to increased demand and weak supply chains have created an unprecedented situation for game developers around the globe. It will take some time, but they’re trying to solve the problem. You can try playing something else if you get annoyed by the waiting. Endwalker won’t be going anywhere soon.
