The show will premiere in 2019
Alex Garland, known for high-concept science fiction movies Ex Machina and this year’s Annihilation, includes a new job: Devs, An limited series works for later she suspects they’re responsible for her boyfriend’s death.
The series will star Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina’s Silent android Kyoko) as Lily Chan, a software engineer at a”cutting-edge tech firm” called Amaya, while Nick Offerman will play Amaya’s CEO, who’s obsessed with his firm’s secretive development division. Cailee Spaeny, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, jin Ha, and Alison Pill will also star in the show.
When he talked with The Verge before this year, Garland noted he worried that”there might be a mismatch between the things I do and opening evenings,” pointing to his work in genre films and the types of films that succeed in the box office. Both Ex Machina and Annihilation were complicated movies, dealing with longstanding celebrity tropes like weird lifeforms and robots in a way that are hard to fit to a two-hour feature film. “I thought maybe in TV, I’d be kind of relieved of the strain” between his storytelling and the requirements of the box office. Garland wrote all eight episodes of this show, and will direct every one.
FX says that Devs will premiere sometime in 2019.
